The senior teams representing Highland Rugby Club opened the NRU season on May 23rd at Victoria Park, hosting the Guelph Redcoats.

First up, the senior women's team faced a well prepared Guelph side. The Redcoats proved too much for the hosts to handle this week. Guelph won 31-5 in a game that was closer than the score indicated.

Following the women's match, the men hosted the Guelph rugby club for the first time in over 15 years. The host Highland squad was eager to prove that they still hold the edge in local rugby talent.

Each club's second teams faced off first, with Highland scoring early and sending the message that the visiting Redcoats would be in for a long day of rugby. The final score was 35-15, in favour of Highland.

Following a quick break, the first teams took to the field with both sides eager to set the tone and claim bragging rights in the battle between local rivals. The hosts outplayed the Redcoats, scoring early and often. Highland was visibly more aggressive, resulting in a lopsided penalty count. In addition, they collected 3 yellow cards throughout the match, with these lapses in discipline giving the Redcoats an opportunity to keep the score close. In the end, Highland left little doubt of which team was best on this day, winning 32-17.

The Highland players won't have long to enjoy this victory, needing to refocus in advance on their meeting with the league leading Burlington Centaurs May 30th. The game will be played at Victoria Park, see you there!
