Highland Splits Games with Waterloo
By Jason Hasson
Waterloo travelled to Fergus for a pair of games at Victoria Park Saturday, as wet and windy games dictated the style of play.
The weather conditions had both teams looking to maintain ball control in the early going. Waterloo’s veteran squad capitalized early on as they were able to break through the Highland defensive line and take a quick 5-0 lead. At that point Highland started to run into some penalty trouble that eventually lead to a yellow card and culminated in a penalty try being awarded that put County ahead 12-0. As the end of the first half neared the Highland squad had seemingly begun to take control of the pace of play as they were able to maintain possession and keep forcing the Waterloo defenders to play on their side of half.
The start of the second half saw this trend continue as some strong forward mauling and crashes led to Stew Richmond barreling over the line to make the score 12-5. Kevin Kim then connected on the convert to close the gap to 12-7. The Highland defensive structure stifled Waterloo for the remainder of the match but Fergus was unable to push any more points across the line losing by 5.
Next action for both mens teams is July 4th in Waterloo in a rematch of this close game
